Raytheon Missile Systems Tri University 2002/2003 Design Competition Champions

Raytheon Missile Systems sponsored the Missile Dampening During Captive Carriage project as part of a tri-university design competition.  Teams from the University of Arizona, Arizona State University and, of course, Northern Arizona University participated in the contest. 

The design consisted of redesigning a missile dampening mechanism to extend the life of missile rails that thousands of military aircraft use throughout the world. For a detailed design description click on the design description link above.

As part of the design contest, the three teams presented to a panel of seven senior engineers at Raytheon Missile Systems in Tucson, Arizona on April 29, 2003. 

The judges scrutinized such factors as easy implementation, low cost, reliability, and user-friendly designs. The judges also scored the teams based on the quality of their design presentations. 

Many senior engineers from Raytheon Missile Systems, design instructors and advisors of all three teams, and representatives from the United States Air Force attended the presentation. 

When the judges tallied the scores, the NAU team came out in first place. The Raytheon judging panel presented the team with a plaque that is now on display in the trophy case at the NAU College of Engineering and Technology lobby.
