Mars Hill/Lowell Observatory Truss Bridge

Introduction

The objective of this project is to develop and evaluate a design for a Timber Town Lattice Truss Bridge for Lowell Observatory to promote future expansion.  The Observatory has plans to expand its current facilities to the south of their propriety on Mars Hill in Flagstaff, AZ.  This site is best known for discovering the former planet Pluto.  As part of this future expansion, a road will be constructed to allow access to the new area from the current facilities.  The client, Lowell Observatory, desires a unique and creative method of spanning a ravine to join this new road and expansion with Mars Hill Road.  To accomplish this, a one-lane covered Town Lattice Truss Bridge has been requested.

The bridge is designed to accommodate both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.  This will be accomplished by dividing the bridge with a barrier between pedestrians and vehicular traffic to ensure safety.   The bridge is also design to conform to Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and American Disability Act (ADA) standards.
