GCS 352 :: Grand Canyon Aesthetics: Studies in Painting, Photography, Architecture, and Literature
This course is a survey of representations of the Grand Canyon region in various artistic media including painting, drawing, sculpture, architecture, photography, and literature, over the past 150 years. We will examine how these expressive constortions reflect changing cultural values, and aid in out understanding of the complex ways in which this remarkable region has come to be defined in the public imagination since the mid-nineteenth century. To this end, we will also consider such genres as tourist memorabilia, scientific reports, poetry, and advertising. Finally, the course presents contemporary artists and writers, who will discuss their current work, and provides visits to trading posts and art galleries in Sedona, Flagstaff and the surrounding region. :: 3 Credits
