Northern Arizona University’s 730-acre mountain campus is located in Flagstaff, a community of nearly 60,000 residents. Flagstaff is located at an elevation of 7,000 feet, just south of the 12,600 foot San Francisco Peaks, a sacred site and recreation area.  The University is at the junction of Interstate Highways 40 (US 66) and 17 – about a 2 hour drive from Phoenix, 4 hour drive to Las Vegas, and 5 hour drive to Albuquerque or Tucson.  The city is served by Amtrak, Greyhound, and both USAirways and Horizon Air.  The campus is surrounded by scenic beauty and natural wonders, from the Peaks to the Canyon in the north; Navajo, Hopi, Monument Valley, and the Painted Desert to the east; and Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, and the deserts to the south.

Northern Arizona University

Northern Arizona University has a student population of about 22,000 at its main campus in Flagstaff and at 30 sites across the state. Committed to a diverse and civil working and learning environment, NAU has earned a solid reputation as a university with all the features of a large institution but with a personal touch. NAU carefully balances teaching, scholarship and service with a faculty and staff dedicated to each student’s success. While our emphasis is undergraduate education, we offer a wide range of graduate programs and research that include numerous environmental topics.

The campus includes seven buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition, there are three student unions, a student health center, a multipurpose recreation facility, an Olympic-sized swimming and diving complex, an Olympic High Altitude Training Center, and numerous playing fields and facilities. As a residential campus, Northern Arizona University provides and atmosphere of friendship and community.

Grand Canyon National Park

Grand Canyon National Park is the setting of many ground breaking events it was one of the first National Monuments, its was instated by Theodore Roosevelt on January 11, 1908.  The land became a National Park on February 26, 1919, it currently has 1,217,403 acres and is governed by the National Park Service.  Since then the park has become an international tourist destination; and is considered by many to be one of the major natural wonders.  Roughly 5 million people visit the park annually, this makes for quite a management necessity. The geology of the Grand Canyon attracts many professional, because the rock layering is distinct and preserved.
