Major Programs

B. S. in Mathematics

This degree is for students wanting a general purpose mathematics degree with a minor of their choosing. It prepares the student for careers in industry or teaching as well as for continuing on to graduate school. To earn this degree, you must complete the four components described below (see the  program sheet for degree details). 
 

Major Requirement 41 hours
Liberal Studies Requirements:  32 hours
Minor Requirements: 18 - 24 hours
General Electives: 29 - 23 hours
Total Required for Degree:* 120 hours

* Be aware that some courses required for your degree may have prerequisites that you must also take.  Check all course descriptions to find out.  You may be able to count these prerequisites toward your liberal studies or general elective credit.

Please note that Northern Arizona University requires that at least 30 hours of the courses you take for your degree must be upper-division courses.

B. S. Ed. in Mathematics

This degree is designed to prepare students for teaching mathematics in the middle school or high school.  To earn this degree, you must complete the four components described below (see the  program sheet for degree details).  This major does not require a minor.

Major Requirements: 44 hours
Teacher Preparation Requirements: 31 - 34 hours
Liberal Studies Requirements:  32 hours
General Electives:  13 hours
Total Required for Degree:* 120 hours

Extended B. S. in Mathematics

This degree requires no minor and thus allows the student to take a more extensive selection of mathematics and statistics courses. The Extended option would be ideal for the student intent on pursuing a graduate degree or a career in one of the four emphasis areas.
To earn this degree, you must complete the four components described below (see the  program sheet for degree details).  You choose one of the four emphases for this degree - mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, or actuarial science.  No minor is required.

Major Requirements: 32 hours
Emphasis Requirements: 24-27 hours
Liberal Studies Requirements:  32 hours
General Electives:  32 - 29 hours
Total Required for Degree:* 120 hours

BAiLS Degree in Mathematics

The Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies degree is a flexible interdisciplinary bachelor’s degree offered by NAU consisting of three blocks of coursework: A block of courses in an emphasis area, a focus block which may be designed by a student in consultation with an advisor, and a communication skills block. The Mathematics/Statistics emphasis consists of 5 specified courses and three electives to total at least 26 hours.

Major Requirements: 59 - 61 hours

Mathematics and Statistics Emphasis:

26 hours

Focus:

15 hours

Communication Skills:

18 - 20 hours
Liberal Studies Requirements:  35 hours
General Electives:  24 - 26 hours
