A senior engineering major placed first in the 1998 Old Guard Oral Presentation Competition sponsered by the Phoenix professional society of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
Andy Dethlefs' oral presentation "Supermilage Vehicle," was his senior design project.
Dethlefs beat an Arizona State University contender, and picked up a $100 as part of the first prize.
Dethlefs then traveled to Colorado State University to compete in the ASME Regional Student Conference with senior mechanical engineering major Jin Ong, senior mechanical engineering major Tanju Baryramoglu, advisor Don Garrett and NAU CET alumnus Jon Furlong, now a design engineer for Ingersoll-Rand.
There are three categories at the regional level - Oral Presentation, Poster Presentation, and a National Design Competition.
