Bachelor of Science Engineering
Civil Engineering Requirements Catalog

While great care has been taken to insure the accuracy of this information, it is only provided for your convenience and is possibly inaccurate. It is the students responsibility to work with their academic advisor and refer to the official NAU Catalog to assure successful completion of the degree program.

To earn this degree, you must complete the three components described in the following paragraphs. This major does not require a minor.

Preprofessional Requirements 62 hours
Professional Requirements 48 hours
Liberal Studies Requirements 35 hours
Total Required for Degree 126-145 hours

Be aware that some courses required for your degree may have prerequisites that you must also take. Please see the Online Undergraduate Catalog for more information about individual classes. (You may be able to count these prerequisites toward your liberal studies credit.)

Please note that you must complete NAU's diversity requirements by taking two 3-unit courses, one in ethnic diversity and one in global awareness. These course may be used to meet other requirements within your academic plan if you choose them carefully.

Also, please note that NAU requires that at least 30 hours of the courses you take for your degree must be upper-division courses. You cannot have more than 2 grades of D in your Engineering and Computer Science courses.

Finally, be aware that the total hours for your degree will be less than 145 if you count some courses under both major requirements and liberal studies. Contact the department for details.

Preprofessional Requirements

These 62 hours provide a foundation for later advanced studies in your major field as well as a basic understanding of other fields of engineering:

Math and science courses:

  • MAT 136, 137, 238, and 239;
  • CHM 151 and 151L;
  • PHY 161, 161L, and 262; and a 3-hour science elective

Engineering science courses:

  • EGR 186, 225, 251, 252, and 286;
  • CENE 180, 253, and 253L;
  • EE 188; ME 291 and 395

Other courses:

  • PHI 105 or 331

Professional Requirements

You take the following 48 hours, which provide you with an overview of different areas in civil engineering and a solid background for further specialization in your field of interest:

  • CENE 150, 270, 331, 333, 333L, 376, 383, 418, 420, 433, 438, 450, and 476;
  • CENE 386W, which meets NAU's junior-level writing requirement;
  • 6 technical units;
  • CENE 486C, which meets NAU's senior capstone requirement

Liberal Studies Requirements

See the General Academic Requirements chapter of the Online Undergraduate Catalog for information about the 35 hours of liberal studies credit that we require. Contact the department for information about liberal studies courses that are specific to this degree.
